In recent years, 7-Eleven has carved out a niche for itself in the Japanese convenience store world as the place to go for gummies, specifically fruit gummies covered in chocolate. The unique combination of soft, juicy fruit centre and crunchy chocolate exterior is a taste sensation that has people buying up bags at a time, but now the chain is adding two new varieties to its lineup, and these ones are even more unusual, as they’re made with Okinawan brown sugar.
Okinawa is famous for producing high-quality brown sugar in its tropical climate, but we weren’t sure how would it pair with chocolate, so we picked up the two new varieties to see how they would taste.

The packaging depicts chocolate-coated mangoes and pineapples decorated with hibiscus flowers, giving them a very summery, tropical look. The two packets look surprisingly similar at first glance, though, so be careful not to grab the wrong one when you’re shopping.

With their beautiful, glossy chocolate coating, these look like solid chocolate balls, but when you lift one to your mouth, you get a slight scent of pineapple, which piques your curiosity as you take a bite.
The first thing you’ll taste is the sweetness of the chocolate, before the sweetly tart pineapple gummy component takes centre stage as you chew, making it feel like you’re eating a chunk of chocolate-covered pineapple. The Okinawan brown sugar is subtle, adding only a slight hint of flavour in the aftertaste. This is welcome news for gummy fans, as those with an aversion to the taste of brown sugar will hardly notice its presence, due to the well-balanced harmony between flavours.

From the second you open the bag, you’ll be engulfed in sweet, summery mango aromas, instantly lifting your mood with their deliciously fruity appeal. The gummy centre in each one is packed with the rich tropical flavour of mango, but when combined with the chocolate coating, the flavour becomes even deeper the longer you chew. As with the pineapple version, the brown sugar isn’t particularly noticeable, creating a nuanced flavour that appeals to adult tastes while making them incredibly easy to eat.
